Including the small ones only local networks can detect, the true number runs into the thousands per day. In the last year USGS catalogued 1,993 earthquakes of magnitude 5 or above.
Where do most earthquakes happen?
Around the Pacific Ring of Fire, the belt of subduction zones circling the Pacific plate through Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Alaska, and the west coasts of North and South America. About 81 percent of the world’s largest earthquakes happen there. In the US, Alaska is the most seismically active state by a wide margin, followed by California.
What magnitude earthquake is dangerous?
Damage usually begins around magnitude 5 for weak structures close to the epicentre, and magnitude 6 and above is damaging in any populated area. Depth matters as much as size: a magnitude 5 directly beneath a city at 8 km depth does more harm than a magnitude 6.5 out at sea or 300 km down.
